The objective of MarshA is to generate scientific and technical knowledge to support the design and planning of restoration actions to maintain and enhance the provision of ecosystem services by seagrasses. Considering the ecological and social dimensions interacting in coastal systems, MarshA will support the identification of the most appropriate restoration actions to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services related to climate change mitigation (decarbonisation) and adaptation (coastal protection). Ultimately, MarshA will provide tools and approaches to integrate estuarine ecosystem services into nature-based management. This goal will be achieved through the accomplishment of four specific objectives:

  1. To predict the distribution of the eelgrass Zostera noltei in the intertidal zones of estuaries in northern Spain using techniques based on remote sensing.
  2. To generate predictive models to quantify the provision of ecosystem services provided by Zostera noltei.
  3. To explore the possibility of valuing ecosystem services by combining the models developed previously with the information provided by large-scale satellite remote sensing.
  4. To develop decision support tools for the design of Zostera noltei restoration actions, providing predictions of restoration outcomes, benefits and risks in terms of ecosystem service provision.
  5. Implement a communication plan adapted to the different sectors of society and capable of generating long-term scientific-technical and social impact.
